Between Levels

A common street across three levels: a hillside neighbourhood building where a shared stair-street, galleries and 48 public rooms connect streets 12 m apart.

Three streets enter a sloping site at +0, +6 and +12 m. Instead of one building per street, two stepped wings on a 36 × 48 m grid share a continuous stair-street and covered galleries, so the building works as a public route as much as a container.

12 room types, from a repair shop to a reading lounge, are deployed as 48 rooms across 5 floors. Each was furnished for its actual width rather than copied and renamed.

    Inside the stepped wings

Cut through the stepped wings, light the slope through the year and follow people up the stair-street from the lower street to the upper one. The site is speculative: sun angles are computed for New York City, with the slope rising to the north.

    A street through the building

Two stepped wings leave a planted stair-street between them. Galleries on every level open onto it, and two bridges cross it, so a resident can walk from the lower street to the upper one through public rooms.
